WOOD WINDOW REPRODUCTION

Cooper Historical Windows accurately replicates wood windows by documenting the original window features, details, and profiles. From this, a shop drawing is created. Using our own Liberty Restoration Glass produced in-house, we offer single pane or insulated glass panels for much greater energy efficiency without sacrificing the period look of the old, wavy glass seen from the exterior. We can reproduce the characteristics of any 19th or 20th century glass. Additionally, we restore and reuse original hardware whenever possible.

WOOD WINDOW REPRODUCTION PROCESS

  • STEP 1:

    REPRODUCTION

    Getting precise information is the key to accurately replicating a historical window. We record every detail and dimension, from the molding profiles to stiles & rails, joinery, parting beads and slip stops, ensuring each component is fully documented.

  • STEP 2:

    MATERIALS & METHODS

    The wood we select determines the durability of the window. We can easily identify the original wood species used in windows from the 1700s and 1800s, but many of these resources are now depleted. Fortunately, in today’s market, we have access to substantially more woods that are suitable for building a high-quality all-wood product.

  • STEP 3:

    HARDWARE

    We restore and reuse the original hardware whenever possible. This includes weights, pulleys and sash locks. Historical reproduction hardware is specified for locations where original hardware is broken, missing or unsalvageable.

  • STEP 4:

    GLASS

    Glass is the most important element in achieving an authentically replicated historical window. This is why, we manufacture our own glass in-house, enabling us to adjust our kilns to make exact matches to your original period glass.

  • STEP 5:

    WEATHERSTRIPPING

    Weatherstripping is essential to the overall energy efficiency of any window because it prevents air infiltration. With a vast array of options to choose from, we will assist you in selecting the right one for your needs.

  • STEP 6:

    FINISHING

    Finishing is the final step to window replication before installation. We use a water-based product with a three step, four coat finishing system, resulting in a robust, weather-resistant finish.
